Prickly Cat Publishing was established in 2013 and is an independent publisher creating fun, engaging books for young readers. We believe that reading should be enjoyable, imaginative and accessible — whether you're a child discovering books for the first time or a grown-up sharing a story with a young reader.
Short & Sweet Reads
Our Short & Sweet Reads series is designed for children who love a good story but don't necessarily want a huge book. The books are full of imagination, humour and adventure, with stories that are just the right length for busy young readers.
The series follows Symphony Smythe, a curious and imaginative girl whose adventures don't always go quite the way she expects!

Short & Sweet Reads is just the beginning. Prickly Cat Publishing will also be bringing you picture books and other stories for young readers, with the same focus on fun, imagination and a love of reading.
About the Author
Christine Hurst is the author of the Symphony Smythe books and the founder of Prickly Cat Publishing. She has written for children’s magazines, created both non-fiction and fiction books.
Symphony Smythe has been living in Christine’s imagination for a very long time. The first Symphony adventure, The Baked Bean Birthday Party, was inspired by a real childhood embarrassment: when Christine's mum served baked beans at a party. Some childhood memories clearly refuse to go away!
Christine loves creating stories that encourage children to use their imaginations, have a laugh and enjoy reading. She lives in New Zealand with her very excitable schnauzer.
